The traffic snarls in Bangalore city .

You stand at any of the major traffic points in Bangalore city and watch in the mornings, how many cars go past you with just a single occupant ? It comes hitting you like a bolt, why are these smart engineers and managers from some of the biggest industrial names, neither doing a car pool nor take the company bus or walk  to their offices .. If the previous night had a shower, the situation gets worse, every Tom, Dick and Harry are out in their car..

When Gandhiji, Mother Teresa, swami Vivekananda, Jesus christ etc talked of the futility of a materially possessed life and guided us to living a very frugal and unwasteful life, i thought let me practice it first, before giving any big sermons ..

The traffic jam in Bangalore city, especially because of last night's heavy rain is unimaginable. For the second week starting I am walking to and from office for the second week too !! Great exercise (5+5 km). .😊 fit as a fiddle..

With the imminent threat of MNCs of moving out of Bangalore as they face lot of productivity loses because of the traffic snarls, the government should do something to address this issue at the earliest.  http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/bogged-by-traffic-woes-mncs-like-emc-corporation-capgemini-set-sights-outside-city/articleshow/49977917.cms

My expt with social media boycott

Click here to read an article on Internet addiction from the NY Times ..

Facebook is a great distraction and so I have boycotted it, totally.

Whatsapp is an interesting app, I get to exchange lot of messages with my students and friends, urgent and non0-urgent. I am still holding on to it. Not abusing or overusing it.

How much ever time one works on the Internet, if it adds value to one's life, thoughts and actions, then it is worth it, else keep it aside.

Banking still on the print edition of The Economist to keep myself updated with the latest national and international events and news around the world.

Innovation links.. GII and tips on How to innovate ..

A very simple and effective definition :

The process of translating an idea or invention into a good or service that creates value or for which customers will pay. To be called an innovation, an idea must be replicable at an economical cost and must satisfy a specific need.

American Society for Quality - Quality month, a report.

"QUALITY & BUSINESS EXCELLENCE IN AEROSPACE"

28 November 2015 - Quest Engg campus in Ecospace, ORR, Bangalore.

10:30 am – Quest Global Presentation
11:00am – Keynote Address – Dr. Bala Bharadwaj (Director, Boeing India R&D)
11:45 pm – Speaker 2- Mr. Manjunath NP (Quality Head-Moog Technology)
1:30 pm - Speaker 3–Mr. Vijay Shrinivas (VP-Quest Engineering)
------------------------------

The presentations were  very good. Dr Bala Bharadwaj took us through the C17 Globemaster III series of transporter aircraft manufacture , the product development life cycle. He spoke on how the complexity in the Globemaster manufacture could be handled by preparing for the Malcolm Baldrige Award. And they were finally successful both with Globemaster and Malcolm Baldrige award. Dr Bala also spoke of the delay of the 787 Boeing Dream liner aircraft. He was of the opinion  that the delay in 787, if any , was due to supply chain problems in the system. What Boeing thought the supplier understood and what he supplied were different resulting in inordinate delays in the manufacture. We also need to wait and see how the new Chinese commercial aircrafts will be a threat the established cos like Boeing and Airbus in the future.

Mr. Manjunath from MOOG technologies, who are also suppliers to Boeing, took us through the quality problems which his organisation faces daily and how they have overcome it. He spoke of Data Quality, right from capturing data to using it.

Mr. Vijay Srinivas gave an exciting talk on Lean Implementation in Quest. Mr. Vijay through many instances spoke of how difficult it was to implement lean and and reduce waste in services compated to manufacturing. The concept of e-5S was indeed very interesting. The cycle time reduction initiative, combined with the introduction of the Quality month helped them exceed customer expectations in many of their initiatives. He also stressed on the adage - RIGHT FIRST TIME, EVERY TIME ..

It is good that ASQ and Quest engg have jointly taken the pains and effort to organise this event for the benefit of the quality professionals and academics of the city of Bangalore

Dr Daniel Goleman on Social Intelligence !!

It has been established through research by Daniel Goleman, armed with a Harvard PhD., psychologist/author, Science Reporter of the New York Times,  and team, through an article in Harvard Business review in 1996, "What makes a leader ?" the true capability of a leader is finally not completely dependent on one's technical skills and intelligence, but on how well one can emotionally get along with one's team, colleagues, peers, seniors and subordinates.

To understand where one stands in terms of emotional traits of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills, l would request you to take the Uty of California Berkeley Emotional Intelligence (EI) quiz to check your emotional intelligence !

In these questions, twenty instances of faces of people in different stages of emotional turmoil, be it happiness, love, flirtatiousness, anger, surprise, pain etc are given. One has to correctly identify the correct emotional state of the person.

A quiz to get one's emotional quotient .. EQ ..

A good talk is given here ..  where Dr Goleman talks of Competence Modeling ..

Have a great time !!

Verghese Kurien, Google Doodle ..

The milk man of India, India celebrates his 94 th birth anniversary today, 26 November .

Were it not for his efforts in Gujarat from the early 50s, India's own milk revolution, catapulting India from a beggar to the world's largest producer of milk would not have been possible.

Important Lessons from failures..

We read lot of books narrating successes where authors narrate their success stories but rarely we read of stories of failure.

Failures can teach us more than successes. It is not only businesses that can fail, even individuals can fail at different points in their professional and personal life. A failure to score high marks in exams, to get a dream job, to study in a dream institute, marriage divorce, to name a few are all failures in personal life, while not being able to retain a great job, being chucked out from responsibility, not getting a desired promotion etc can be professional failures.

How does one come out of the dejection one gets from a failure. Failure does not mean that one should shut away from the world, and lead a lonely life, unable to take the shame and burden of failure. On the other hand, it should make us stronger in mind and spirit to meet up with failure and take them as opportunities to learn and improve ourselves.

Here I am listing easy twenty points gathered from different sources on the Internet which we need to understand on how to overcome failures and leverage on it.

1, Focus on improving what has performed in the past than trying on something totally new

2. Understand our mistakes and own up to it, only then can we come out of it.

3. Never blame anyone for our failures, If we want the world to change, first let ourselves change

4. Love what you do, unless we love what we do, we cannot give our full to it and succeed.

5. Have a person to help you in the darkest times is more than anything in the world, like a mentor to give practical sound advice

6. No one is in perfect control of what is happening, nor do we know. There are lot unseen things, take life as it comes, try one's level best to be in control

Eisenhover Matrix, concentrate on square 2.
7. Utilise time very carefully as it is the most precious resource. The Eisenhover matrix can help us prioritise activities

8. External factors of motivation may not help us all the time, we need to push ourselves harder many a time. Unless we push ourselves, nothing works for us.Motivation is temporal, but the pain and hardwork one puts is permanent.

9. Always be open to speak one's mind, never hide anything. We may earn a temporary discomfort, but in the long run we will have a clean heart and mind

10. Lose oneself at times, to find oneself. Never be afraid of failures, as it comes time and again. Take failures in our stride and then we will appreciate how much it has helped to shape our successes.

11. Very frequently our ego could be the greatest impediment to our success, shed it if need be

12. Try to tackle problems head on, instead of procrastination and delaying a decision to a later date. Even if it is a wrong decision, the earlier we learn from it, more beneficial it is for us as we can try some other alternatives without wasting time

13. Listen to feedback, whatever be it. It can help us reprioritise our preferences

14. Look at the bigger picture than short sighted view, DO NOT MISS THE WOOD FOR THE TREES !

15. People usually lose sight of their initial goal, reason or passion as they go ahead in life. Never succumb to it. Always stick to your initial passion whatever happens.

16. Failures are not the end of life, it is just part of the experiment, the experiment is not over as yet. Just have the patience to see the experiment through.

17. Success or failure can be whether we are at it or not. If we give up early enough, that is the end of it.

18. Failure may sometimes want us to change our priorities, be prepared for it

19. Self-belief and self-confidence of our basic abilities is important

20. As Winston Churchill once said, success is the ability to move from failure to failure without losing the enthusiasm, attitude regarding failure is what is important. It is not the end of the world.

21. Having the courage to pursue and not give up.

The underlying point I wish to make is - Patience is finally what pays off.
