GIC of Annual Financial results 2015-16 ..

Press Meet news report, ET, 11 July, '16.

Yesterday sister Alice Vaidyan, CMD, GIC of India, presented the annual financial results for 2015-16 of GIC at Mumbai. 

Net profit up by 5.4% to Rs. 2,957 crores (app US $440 million) before tax.

22% increase in premium income to Rs. 18,346 crores (app US $3 billion)

GIC is the third largest dividend provider to the Government of India after State Bank of India and Life Insurance Corp of India (LIC).

Taking the corporation to be one among the top global Insurance giants, especially a a time when the economy is opening up and lot of private players with global experience are entering the market. is a challenge Alice Vaidyan will have to give her whole attention for the next couple of years.

How disruptive technologies in automobiles evolved ..

Comparing Henry Ford and Elon Musk ..

Both Henry Ford and Elon Musk have been revolutionary leaders in their own fields, one into compact internal combustion engines and the other into compact and stylish electric cars. Both revolutionised the automobile industry during their times.

Ford revolutionised the automobile industry to such  great extent that he made motor cars affordable for the masses. Is Musk going to do the same ?

Musk's first electric car - The Roadster ....

Both Ford and Musk set out their first car at age 33. Ford came with the Orient Quadricycle and Musk came up with the TESLA Roadster, both were very expensive. They went on to make different variants and finally at age 45 Ford (1913) hit it big with Ford Model T and at age 45 (2016), Musk hits it big with his TESLA Model S.

Internal combustion engines (IC engines) went on to conquer motoring for the next one hundred years and Musk is setting on to conquer and change the face of motoring with electric cars for the next one hundred years.

Fuel cars would disappear with all its complex mechanisms, cylinders, pistons, crankshafts, combustion, smoke, CO, fossil fuels, what not and would be replaced by Electric cars. The Megafactory Musk built in the Arizona desert to make up to 50 GW of electrical energy batteries a year, is the largest building in the world under a single roof.

In geneology, there is some similarity.. While Henry Ford's geneology traces his parents to Ireland and earlier to that to western England, Musk's genelogy traces his parents to South Africa and earlier again to England. 

Both these youngsters disrupted the personal transportation space during their life time, Henry Ford through the IC engine and Elon Musk through the Electric car .. 

While IC engines survived for hundred years, we have to see how far the electric cars would survive ? Will they wipe out IC engines in total, replaced by electric cars or allow both to run for some twenty thirty years before completely switching over to electric cars.

Its great to see how great similar disruptive technologies evolve in the same sector over a time period of one hundred years.

Towards the end of the second World War, in 1944, global nations got together at Bretton Woods New Hampshire to discuss on how to stabilise the global economy and the economy of the individual allied nations. 

The United Nations played a key role in this meeting and hence it was called the United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference, also called the Bretton Woods Conference as it was held in Bretton Woods.. 

The news reel excerpt briefly describes the International Monetary Conference of 1944 (before WW2 ended), held at the Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. This conference led to the birth of International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in 1944.

Importance of having great vision in leadership ..

Importance of Vision in Leadership ..

Most of the time we extol great leaders as how they managed people, events, led the country etc.

But is there a different dimension to leadership than what has been discussed so far. 

Great leaders have great vision and this vision drives their passion, this passion drives their belief and this belief is the basis for their action.

If Nelson Mandela did not have the great vision of a free South Africa, South Africa would still have been an impoverished nation.

If Mahatma Gandhi did not have the great vision of a free, strong and powerful India, India would not have been liberated from Great Britain and would have continued to be its colony. If India's great leaders who led India after it gained independence from the British did not have great vision, India would have been left far behind.

We would not have had the IITs, IIMs, scientific leadership in great organisations like IISc, CSIRs, indigenously developed space technology ready to take man to Mars and beyond, indigenously developed nuclear technology, indigenously developed defence capabilities like in our first super-sonic missile system on Sukhoi S31 jet fighters and the like ..

Great leaders have to be great visionaries, they should be able to see the future and plan to work to it. They are well informed, well read of the world around them and have the insatiable urge to do something better for the development of society.

Great leaders have a vision of the society, they want it to move from the present state to a future state which they feel will bring peace and properity to the world and its people. 

Great leaders work for the good of the society, the country and the world they live in, they are not sectarian, they are not partial, they are not partisan and they are not bound by the confines of country, colour, case, creed and so on.

Great leaders are able to identify great leaders and choose them to lead. 

In short, great leaders make the world a better place to live, with freedom, dignity, peace, prosperity, scientific and social development, a world free of diseases and poverty, free of war and litigation, destruction and desolation, annihilation and ruination ..

What Michel Dell refers as framework is the vision we mentioned. Let us hope India gives the needed and necessary leadership to the world to fulfil all the above necessary qualities of great leadership to the world.

India believes that science and technology should be used only for such applications that can bring peace and mutual understanding and trust in the world, than suffering, violence and hardship ..

Even though India has the fastest missile fitted to a fighter jet in the world, the supersonic Brahmos missile, and thus has the fastest air offensive system in the world, these days, warfare is not what determines who dominates the world, but it is decided in the retail outlets, factories, research educational institutes and villages across the country ..

Soft power is more valuable and lasting than hard power !! Even though US has some of the best equipped armies in the world, it is only #2 in the global scenario in terms of economic growth, infra structure development etc..

Subramanian swamy, a disgrace to humanity ?

The cheap and petty politician from Chennai, earlier President of the much splintered Janata party, Subramanian Swamy's frantic efforts  to remain in national limelight for his own survival in politics, has faced failures every now and then. Though he claims to be learned, his interactions most often belie his knowledge.

His picking of soft targets from his "newly adopted party", which was repeatedly ignoring him, got him reprimands from the party which forced him to target politicians from other parties !

Arvind Kejriwal is the Delhi politician, an IITKGP alumnus, IRS, Ramon Magsaysay award winner (nobody in the political establishment now is as much intellectually and mentally advanced as AK), present Delhi CM and the most popular politician in the country having decimated the opposition BJP, giving it just 5% of seats in the Delhi state assembly elections last year, is the pain in the neck for Modi. 

By taking Kejriwal headon, the dumb Swamy thinks he can appease his political bosses to give him a position of authority in the central cabinet. Swamy by trying to defame Kejriwal through character assassination and intentionally creating a smokescreen, a cheap political tactic used by dumb politicians, is digging his own grave. Swamy knows that never even in ten births can he reach anywhere near Kejriwal.

They are always looking for opportunities to impress others ..

Though Swamy claims to have taught at Harvard Law School, it would be a disgrace even for Harvard to mention him as part of their earlier faculty.  The intellectually challenged Swamy thinks that these "smart" actions of picking up issues like these with his political counterparts in India, will make him popular and help revive his political fortunes.  

Looking for cheap publicity and fame, this man somehow wants to remain in spotlight every time, but for the wrong reasons.

Swamy's communal and intellectually challenged thought processes are equally flawed and skewed as are his efforts to regain  political fortunes and reputation as a petty politician out to serve his personal egos than the pressing  issues for the country. As a reader of psychology, such behaviour is popularly classified as "attention deficit disorder" at younger age !

Swamy was under the impression that his antics would benefit the government and he would in turn be benefited with a central cabinet berth. What a pervert he was !! And he thought the public are fools not to read his deranged mind !

Swamy will get the treatment he deserves, and be swept off to the dustbin of history by the people !

What a shame and a matter of disgrace for the established, bureaucratic religions with their hierarchy, positions of power, authority ? Do the spiritual leaders, who are supposed to have very pious, selfless thinking, ever think of the poor at least for a minute daily ? They are thankful to God for protecting their chair, the incoming revenues to get their expenses running and the daily bureaucratic chores going. They find excuses they are too busy with the daily activities to protect their asses, that they get very less time to care for the real warriors of God, the poor, weak, vulnerable and less fortunate in society. They are busy protecting their seats of power and authority.

Though they care least for the poor and needy, they do not mince words in their prayers to claim to represent all sections of society. HYPOCRITES to the core !! 

I challenge all the religious organisations, especially the Christian community across Bangalore, instead of building bigger and bigger religious structures and churches, can you PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEE do something good for the poor and the society  ??

Otherwise the religious organisations are worthless .. pity them .. This should be a wakeup call to all fat, insensitive, selfish religious leaders, buck up and start doing something for society, lest people kick you out !

Religious institutions exist not for politics, it does not signify authority, it is not bureaucracy, it is not a command center, it is not a cult, it is not clout, it is not a mafia, it is not business, it is not a syndicate, neither is it the underworld, a religious institution will lose its relevance if it fattens day by day, uncaring for the suffering millions around.

Any religious institution becomes meaningless if it cannot at least be a service centre and nothing more !!

Stephen Hawking - will mankind be wiped out in the next hundred years ?

All intelligent inhabitants on planet earth, have a couple of genuine questions or doubts to ask other knowledgeable people inhabiting planet earth. Some of these unanswered questions are
1. Are we the lone high level intelligent living beings in the Universe ?
2. Do we have competition from other intelligent species from distant galaxies in our vast Universe ?
3. With the knowledge that the Universe is constantly expanding, will the future be the same as it has been all this while ?
4. How is matter formed in this Universe from unexplained forces and space ?

Prof. Stepehen Hawking, Cambridge U Prof, scientific thinker and cosmologist

As these questions and more remain unanswered (or outside the realm of human intelligence) to unravel, comprehend and interpret, Cosmologist Stephen Hawking points to the three main threats to humanity. 74 year old theoritical physicist, Stephen Hawking, author of the classic, "A Brief History of Time", Professor and Director of Research at Centre for Cosmology at University of Cambridge has highlighted three catastrophies to befall planet earth in the next one hundred years and finish off human domination.

First catastrophe is the proliferation of artificial intelligence robotics. Imagine a world where humans would be listening to the commands and orders from AI robots. Imagine the disaster that would befall humanity then.

In Hawking's own words, "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete (with these self-proliferating machines) and would be superseded". Artificial intelligence powered autonomous weapons like "autonomous armed quadcopters" could spell the end of mankind.

Second catastrophe as Prof Hawking predicts is the arrival of aliens from outer planets. Either they come with better intelligence and better weapons and technology to conquer mankind and see its elimination or are less intelligent and hence not much of a threat, would depend on how well we are prepared to meet such an eventuality.

The third catastrophe to befall planet earth in the next hundred years is the uncontrolled proliferation of atomic weapons resulting in a global war which will ensure the end of life on planet earth.

Prof. Hawking also talks of global warming  and genetically mutated viruses as the other two imminent and dangerous threats staring at mankind, if we do not come out with a global concerted action plan to combat these threats facing mankind as a whole.

Elon Musk of TESLA, SpaceX and Solar City fame fears Artificial Intelligence to be the greatest existential threat to human life on planet earth, indeed it is, displacing millions of jobs.

Some questions that come to our minds naturally are -

1. What is mankind doing to prevent such a devastating catastrophe ?

2. Do we need a change of lifestyle and taking stock of how lavishly and sparingly we consume earth's resources ?

3. Do we need to go slow on implementing certain technologies like artificial intelligence and nuclear energy using fission and fusion routes, for the benefit of mankind ?

4. Predicting disaster to befall planet earth, should we accelerate our expeditions to find alien habitable planets and environments where humans can live peacefully and purposefully ?

5. Can reduction of the pace at which we exploit the natural resources of earth and instead migrate to non-conventional sources of energy like solar, hydel, wind etc, prolong our existence on planet earth ?

6. Do humans and other living beings on planet earth need to think concertedly and unitedly to avoid any tragedy or catastrophe to befall on them ?

7. If we do not take care, will we be reversing the process of evolution over the past 4.6 billion years on planet earth which ensured our existence, in the matter of a hundred years ?

Let mankind do an introspection to find where we could have gone wrong and stop the destruction of planet earth, to let our future generations exploit and live on it as we and our past generations have done with peace and prosperity.

Sustainability thoughts over the past couple of decades on planet earth looked only at the natural environment and how animal and plant life gets adversely affected by disregarding sustainability measures. Now we need to look not only at sustainability, but also at man made disasters like dangerous fall outs of nuclear weapons, artificial intelligence and genetically engineered viruses ...

Hope mankind as a whole will be able to overcome these pressures and  ensure all living beings, animals, plants, multi-cellular, single cellular organisms continue to thrive on planet for all future generations and time ..

US denial of technology catalysed Indian technological growth ..

Cutting long history short, we find India which was till 1700 AD controlling 40% of global GDP, (see graphic, China following closely with 30% and the much acclaimed, haughty, mighty, pompous Roman empire under Julius Caesar was controlling just 8% of global GDP) suddenly crumble over the past three centuries and be enslaved by the colonial, industrialised countries of the world. 

It was thanks to a free India and the brilliant statesmanship of our brave, courageous leaders who with great determination, ingenuity and hardwork, made our forward journey, though rocky at times, very eventful, momentous, remarkable and outstanding !

There has been a SINGLE factor - denial to share advanced technology, that has helped us in great measure in our technological and scientific progress over the past six decades. This factor, though demoralising to suffer extreme humiliation, ignominy and loss of face, the leaders and citizens of the country were never ready to give up so easily. 

Our success in the area of nuclear, missile, space, super computing technologies, in meteorology, satellite communication, regional navigation etc has been entirely attributed to this wilful, conscious denial by the "big brother" US to help India technologically over the past many decades, when it was plain fact that it's growth was being fueled by the unmindful, dumb migration of our ignorant countrymen to US in search of jobs.

Every nation has the right to protect its sovereignty and its technological progress, by not sharing it with anyone else. India completely accepts and respects that US decision. But should it be at the cost of instigating and inciting our neighbours into violence and destabilising the whole region ? 

What made this denial excruciating and agonizing, by rubbing salt into our wounds, was when US was found wilfully and consciously helping, materially, technologically or otherwise, our regional puny, haughty neighbours mess around. This unfortunately has raised the biggest threat in turn to US itself, through 9/11 and God knows, how many more to follow !

Time has shown that this US denial has been our best blessing in disguise and the best challenge to our determination to persevere and succeed, not to be kicked around by worthless entities.

Now at our limited success, they shamelessly extend a helping hand ! Our superior culture doesn't permit us to snub or slight them !

And still many of our dumb countrymen, still extol and wish to migrate to that nation of petty, bigoted and prejudiced minded people ! 🙏🏻

One day when India takes peaceful, sensible (not right-wing or petty minded) leadership of the world, we are sure, these memories will return to haunt US ..

The five paths to identify reverse innovation possibilities..

Reverse Innovation comes up with innovative thought processes and products which have been necessitated either through constraints in the work environments, economic structures, socio-political sytems and the like.

The easy steps to identify opportunities for reverse innovation are given in this picture. when one looks at a product or process which invites reverse innovation thinking, think broadly in these five areas, one is sure to find an opportunity to reverse innovate the product or process.

The perspective is from the developing world and not a developed world.

1. Performance gap - how do you think the way you are getting things done presently could be improved. The performance which one enjoys in the developed world comes at a cost which is unaffordable for the people from the developing world. Naturally they would look at ways and means by which the same function or end use (PERFORMANCE) could be achieved by thinking up different products, processes, raw materials etc..

2. Infrastructure gap - Are the same set of physical infrastructure attainable for the people from the developing world ? If it is in the case of transportation, or energy or storage of perishable and non-perishable items, how can thi sgap be levelled by thinking of an alternative idea or product or process ..

3. Sustainability gap - Are the products, processes we use in our society helping the environment or damaging it. What can we do to help the environment ?

4. Regulatory gap - The government in many developing countries come up with regulations that can hamper the growth of industries in the country. These regulations may not exist in other countries. So identify those areas or gaps where one can think of bringing about some improvement that can help ease the regulatory environment in the country.

5. Preference gap - Very frequently we come across setups where one is unaware of the preferences for certain products or processes in certain countries either through culture or habits or geographical necessities or habits over centuries in developed economies. When one can propose a different approach to developing products, ideas or processes which are deviating from the existing preferences, it leads to reverse innovation.

These gaps give a definite direction to any reverse innovation activity or initiative in a developing country.

If each of the gun in US were to take one life each, some guns would still not have a subject. Sad .. Whatever be the idea of the framers of the gun control law to protect each citizen from the state too, if the state acts strange, noone would approve this is the right path US should take. It is inviting disaster and inviting a culture where citizens would feel upset with other citizens and the state if their rights are not guaranteed or ensured, to go on a rage and take other people's lives. Some of the ill-effects of a materialistic world which the affluent people would never agree to.

What is happening in the most luxurious and (materially not intellectually) developed economies is a case in sociology and how cultures should evolve over years. After enjoying all luxuries, people get bored and take to strange pastimes and pleasures like homosexuality, gun culture, terrorism etc ..

The framers of the US constitution and the proponents of the gun laws may be extra smart and can talk care of any argument for or against guns, and it is none of the business of people from the most peaceful state in the world, India.

But in the interest of the future of humanity and the materialistic, less intelligent people in the western hemisphere, control guns in society, else you will have to see innocent children and citizens being gunned down not by terrorists, but by your own countrymen and you would have nobody to point fingers at then.

We have seen across history that when cultures get too self-indulgent, it deteriorates and dies out ! People never learn from history !!

1000 core Microprocessors at lightning clockspeeds .

1000 core, 1.75 Ghz microprocessor ..

I remember the clockspeeds of microprocessors on the desktop at CET (Govt. College of Engg, Trivandrum, Kerala, India) in '86 at 1-2 Mhz, Govt Engg College, Goa, India at 32 MHz in '88 and IIT Bombay, India at 256 MHz in '98. 

The recently developed kilocore (1000 independent cores each at max 1.75 Ghz) processor from UC Davis gives a max of 1.75 trillion Hz  (1,750,000,000,000 Hz, ie. 1.75 million Mhz) which is 1.75 million (1,750,000) times faster than the '86 1 MHz microprocessor chip at CET .. 

This chip is 250 times faster than the 1.75 Ghz quad core chip I have on my Google hardware based Android smartphone..

This is mind-boggling ! And at max performance it consumes just 0.7 KW ie. 7 units of power for working 10 hrs at 1.75 trillion Hz speed !!

A first sure step from the old Mess Sec of Hostel3, IIT Bombay..

It was very satisfyling to note India's most dynamic and cool defence minister (from Goa), Manohar Parrikar, (was the former Mess Secretary of Hostel 3 at IIT Bombay) is a B Tech from one of the most prestigious technical institutes of the world, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Parrikar has initiated the first steps at planning to start the manufacture, from design and prototyping of fighter jets in India from end of 2016 -17. This will naturally be followed by design and manufacture of commercial planes.

This first step was what India needed badly..

This is bad news for Europe and United States as their aircraft companies had already gained the upper hand in the defence and commercial aviation industry world over, often in unethical ways, which includes fighter jets and armaments, commercial planes like Airbus and Boeing and their different variants.

If Indian space technology industry could design cryogenic engines which can take upto 2.5 T payload to space (experiments for the 4.5T payload into space is underway, waiting for maturity) and carry out inter-planetary expeditions spanning at least 200 million kilometres non-stop over 10 months across the solar system at lowest costs in the world, designing planes that needs to be afloat for just a couple of hours at the most and a distance of couple of thousand kms at speeds a fraction of what is achieved in space, is just chicken feed for Indian scientists and space technologists ..

A leader to give direction to Indian aviation industry

It is this confidence that Indians can manufacture high technology aviation products from within the country which needs to be reinforced among Indian corporates, both in public and private sector, which is the need of the hour. Indian scientists and technologists are craving for that confidence and the necessary political leadership in this direction and Manohar Parrikar, the able technocrat Indian Defence Minister is the right guy who can give the needed leadership to bridge that gap.

India already has a huge pool of technical manpower that can design advanced rockets and aerodynamic structures. India already has 14,000 engineers who are working at Indian Space research Organisation (ISRO) and the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) laboratories across the country, two organisations that have brought laurels for the country.

What India lacked was the right political leadership in the fighter and commercial jets planes manufacturing. We should believe in ourselves and understand that we are miles ahead of Europe and China in space technology and related rocket technology.

Being an effective political leader ..

In the coming years, due to better affordability of the population for air travel, air passenger traffic is going to boom, new airports will be coming across the B and C class cities, the new aviation policy and the entry of very competitive private sector breaking government monopoly in the aviation market in the country, the demand for commercial planes is going to boom to thousands of jet planes annually.

When we have the technology, why should we depend on foreign companies, who are much inferior to India's ISRO and DRDO, to manufacture for us and drain away our foreign exchange ?

If India does not immediately use indigenous R&D to exploit this demand by making planes with indigenous developed technology, we are going to face a huge drain of foreign exchange and poor development in all related and allied areas like supply chains, hospitality, transportation sector in the country.

Being from the technical side and smart at it, Manohar Parrikar is the saviour for the Indian aerospace industry, both military and commercial. The first step taken today at a meeting in Pune to announce such a dream is indeed a small step, but a sure and firm step for a thousand if not million mile journey.

Partnering with the private sector in the country and getting more central government organisations than just the limping Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, taking up the responsibility of taking India to the forefront of the aviation industry is a step definite to bear fruits in the long run. Someone has to bell the cat and someone should surely do it, lest India be left behind. That is the last thing any Indian would want to.

Having led the world for all of history till 300 years back and back on track to take the global reins in another fifty years, India's global leadership in the area of science and technology is inevitable.

The only way to break the back of the western noxious machinations against the developing world in defence area is to start with, developing indigenous capability in the area of fighter and commercial jets, Parrikar knows this very well.
