Ruchika and her tormentor ...


If you have a daughter, you will probably be worried how can a Police Officer, a public servant, who is supposed to help keep law and order in the society,  turn into a demon and hound minor girls for sexual favours and molest them ??

Should we allow such people to live in a civilised society like ours?

One fact we should never forget is that for one Ruchika whom the world knows, there are a thousand more Ruchikas who have gone into oblivion, at the hands of the demonised police forces.. We need to bring reforms to our police forces and try to lessen the shame the dept as a whole now carries because of some black sheep in their midst.

Rathore should be given the most extreme punishment after giving him a fair hearing .. It is for the safety and safe upbringing of our daughters.

The past year was very eventful, for India, the world and personally for me too..

Any better time for Indian cricket ?


M S Dhoni  most successful Indian cricket captain, with Sachin, the most prolific cricketer of all time and Virender Sehwag, the cricketer of the decade, all grace the Indian team to make it the world's number one test team !!

Ruchika, Rathore, CBI and Judiciary ..

The decision by Ruchika's father to file a petition in the Supreme Court asking former DGP of Haryana, SPS Rathore be re-investigated for his role in abetment of the suicide of Ruchika is a laudable step.

The monster he was, SPS Rathore could not have gone any further in exerting his official and political influence to subvert the case accusing him of abetting the suicide of Ruchika, and the pursuant terror tactics against her family. His role in influencing CBI oficials to drop serious charges against hime proved successful ( the evasion of Press and the feigning of ignorance of a 10 year old case by former CBI Chief R K Raghavan is an indicator of his complicity in the crime..)

In all seriousness Ruchika' family will get justice and the way things are going, looks like Rathore monster will be going behind bars very soon. The Law Minister Veerappa Moily has been vociferous in asking for the re-trial of the case. Judicial reforms are also being initiated to see that no more such instances recur in India ..

Last evening's Big Fight on NDTV, which was discussing the Ruchika case with anchor Burkha Dutt was an absorbing one with all major players including Ms Kiran Bedi, Ruchika's parents, except Rathore making appearance and unitedly asking for a fair re-trial was the climax for these discussions.

N D Tiwari steps down in disgrace ..

The Governor of Andhra Pradesh N D Tiwari, formet Union Minister and CM for many years of UP and Utterakhand, had to shamefully quit from the governorship of Andhra Pradesh after being nailed by a Andhra TV channel of sex romp in the Raj Bhavan in Hyderabad.

While some of our politicians think that they are unassailable, above law and can continue living in pomp and splendour the rest of their lives, wasting precious public money on their security and luxury, others do lead a sober, meaningful life serving the country. The NDTiwari incident has been a major blot on the Congress party and repairing the damage can take a lot of time.

The rise and fall of N D Tiwari is another example of the famous quote by Lord Acton, 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely !!'

The disgraceful stepping down of L K Advani as the leader of BJP, after being accused by Liberhan Commission of bringing the nation to the verge of communal discord and anarchy is another example of how selfish politicians with misguided childhood upbringing, misuse the gullible and educated public for their personal, petty benefits in the name of ideology.

Governor and Lokayuktha leading the charge against the Bellary goons ..

HE The Governor of Karnataka Shri Hansraj Bhardwaj and the Lokayuktha Justice Hegde, along with the Forum for Civil Liberties are in the forefront of the charge asking the CM Yediyurappa to take action against CBI probed ministers Janaradhana Reddy and his brother , the mining barons ( too shameful..) to prevent the thugs from Bellary from continuing to discharge the duties as enshrined in the Constitution of India as Ministers in Karnataka government.

The fact that Yediyurappa's hands are tied and it looks as if the directive from the BJP High Command is to let the issue die a natural death and not to institute any enquiry which will bring out the truth regarding illegal mining and antagonise these ministers ( monsters..?) from Bellary who have been the biggest contributors to the party fund ..

Sooner than later, CM will have to dump these rogues and SC will come up with exemplary punishment which will recover not only the money they have illegally got by selling robbed iron ore which belongs to the state, but also impose heavy fines on them not to repeat such wrongdoings in future. This will be a lesson for the other mining rogues from Bellary too to stick to the rules and not to assume extra constitutional powers on them..

Mining thugs find the going tough !!

The Bellary Reddy brothers ( mining rogues and respectable ministers in the Karnataka ministry..) who caused lot of problems for Karnataka CM Yediyurappa, now finds the going tough as the CBI is ready to start the investigations into their illegal mining activities in the mining leases given to them on the recommendations of AP CM Rosaiah and the Supreme Court empowered committee.

The crores these brothers have illegally amassed over the years with YSR's son, Jagan, will be exposed and these cheats will be brought to justice .. India is not a banana republic and one cannot fool the people for long and get away with it. The news is very pleasing to the ears of all peace loving citizens who believe in the rule of law.

Even though their evil intents ( rs 600-700 crores) are not as severe as Raju of Satyam ( rs 8000 crores..) or Bernie Madoff ( Rs 2,50,000 crores..), evil intent needs to be punished and let us hope the law takes its rightful course in this greatest, populous, vibrant and most lively democracy of the world !!

India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and US.. Bright future for the world ?


The recent article by Fareed Zakaria in Newsweek, Nov 30, "The Prize is India", writes of how India's interests in Afghanistan are the same as US' - to defeat the Taliban and to support the elected Afghan govt.

Indian Govt's aid to Afghanistan has largely gone to build schools and infrastructure. While Pakistan on one hand is fighting the Pakistani Taliban in Waziristan  ( with an eye on the liberal US funding to keep a failed state going), it has not touched the Afghani Taliban in Baluchistan !! The prize US can expect by its intervention in Afghanisattan is not only Afghanistan but also a friendly, peaceloving, strong and democratic India. By supporting Indian actions in Afghanistan, and engaging Pakistan to finish off the Afgani version of Taliban, US will be eyeing on an early diplomatic and military settlement of the issue.

Quote : Obama must keep in mind that South Asia is a tar pit filled with failed and dysfunctional states save for one long established democracy of 1.2 billion people that is the second fastest growing major economy in the world, a check on China's rising ambitions and a natural ally of the United States. - unquote.

Just ahead of Dr Manmohan Singh's visit to US, all major news media have reported highly of the meeting of the leaders of the world's two major democracies. 

The declaration beforehand of UN Summit at CopenHagen on Global Climate by US, China and India to bring about exacting cuts in emissions from 17 % (US) to 40 % (China) and India (about 30-50%) by 2020 on 2005 levels, is a positive sign that the major economies can indeed work together and they mean business !!

China and US agree to limit CO2 emissions before CopenHagen UN summit ..


The Copen Hagen UN Summit, 7-18 December 2009, will see China also agreeing to reduce its CO2  emissions to 50 % of the 2005 levels by year 2020. But China uses a different measure of pollution standard which is directly related with the economic might of the country, ie GDP. Carbon Intensity is the amount of CO2 emitted for each unit of GDP.

US has agreed to reduce the CO2 emissions by 17 % of 2005 levels by year 2020.

Pressure is thus mounting on India the other major international player to come up with some limits to bring down CO2 emissions.

The arrested customs officials at the Chennai airport need to be tried and given model, exemplary punishment. This evasion of paying customs duty and tax is a great drain on the Indian govt revenue, all because of the dirty mindset of a few customs officials who want to get rich soon. Little do they realise tht alll this money will finally only spoil them..

The customs dept needs to be cleansed, top to down, hope the CBI makes more such arrests across the country's airports and instil some discipline and values in the dept. !! 

Like the Police Dept, these days it is very derogatory to even mention that one is employed in the Customs dept.. The common man looks down so much on these people !!

CEC of SC and CBI enquiry into mining thugs' businesses ..

The Supreme Court appointed Central Empowerment Committee could not have come up with a more strongly worded report on the illegal mining activity happening in the obalapuram mining area, bordering AP and Karnataka. Run by the politically strong Bellary Reddy brothers and Jaganmohan Reddy, son of the late YSR of AP, the report by the SC and the CBI enquiry ordered by AP govt will send shivers down the spine of the mining thugs (respectable ministers in the Karnataka Govt..) Yediyurappa must be gleeful with joy at the curious turn of events. Reddy brothers cannot find any help from Sushma Swaraj, their political mother and messiah...

Illegally appropriating state property and living off it, throwing weight around, is not only a crime, it works against natural justice and amounts to robbing in daylight. While poor people are imprisoned when they do small thefts, here respectable thugs from the govt., rape the govt of crores of rupees of revenue and walk scot free. What an irony ?

The govt needs to act fast and as per the CEC report, recover not only the costs of iron ore taken out, but impose model punishment with a hefty penalty and imprisonment, so that such daylight robberies re not repeated in future, by anybody, either from the ruling party or the opposition.

The hands of the govt and the judiciary needs to be strengthened. The representatives of the people should come forward and show they really care to fight corruption . It is hoped all political parties will help the CBI and SC to stop this robbery by ministers in the Karnataka govt.

Vsisit to Raj bhavan, Bangalore..


The first time I visited Raj Bhavan was on Gandhi Jayanthi Day, Oct 2, 2008. Jobin also was with me.

Some months back I came to know that Bayikutty ammamma's son, Lt Navin from Indian Navy is joining the Raj Bhavan as the ADC (Aide De Camp) of the Governor, H R Bharadwaj. When babychayan gabe me a call on Thusday evening, while I was shoping, it was  big surprise, both of them were in Bangalaore Raj Bhavan wand wanted to visit us on Friday.

Accordingly on Friday, both of them and Navin came in the official Raj Bhavan car. They were here for an hour and more and returned.

Accordinglu we alo gave them a return visit on Saturday. We went to the fruit market, bought some fruits and at 4.45 PM left home to Raj Bhavan. We reached there by 6.30 PM. 

Navin took us around and showe the majestic halls. the meeting room, office room , the lawns etc.. It was a majestic sight to see. We were back home at 10.30 PM.

Next sunday, we are planning to ask Navin to come to the Orthodox Church, to be introduced to our priests.

The hate master silenced by the batting maestro ..

Sachin Tendulkar silences the hate master (paper tiger, Bal Thackeray) by claiming that he is first an Indian and then a Marathi. Mumbai is for Indians and not only for Marathis .. Mumbai was made by the efforts of people from all over India and not just the Marathis ..

It is very difficult to understand why Thackeray is claiming Mumbai as his family property only to be used/misused by his sons and nephews.. Shouldn't regional chauvinism and parochialism too be branded as criminal misdemeanour ? It ends up in physical violence inflicted on some innocents and is basically disruptive in nature and acting against the integrity of the nation.

Will this man who is yet to come to his senses after the shocking electoral defeat last week, signalling that he no more represents the Marathi Manoos, stop his senseless rants and try to realise the damage caused by his statements ?

Will the media too stop taking this up, giving unnecessary importance to an anti-social element ?

How HP evaluates its Inventory Costs ?


We know of limited inventory costs, ie. Item costs, holding costs and shortage costs. In some cases, we also discuss about obsolescence costs.

HP did a study of its inventory related costs around end 90s and beginning 2000. To its dismay HP found that inventory costs were almost equal to the PC business' total operating margin and the conventional inventory holding costs accounted for just 10 % of its total inventory related costs. In a global scenario with global suppliers and global customers, there were some other interesting costs to be worried about.

In the scale of inventory related costs and presented in descending order , first comes the Component Devaluation Costs. When prices dropped for excess components which were with the company, the distribution channel and in the pipeline with the transporters, the company incurs a devaluation cost at all these points in the SC.

The Price Protection Cost is the cost incurred by the company when the prices have dropped after the items have been shipped to the retailers. All unsold items with the retailers are compensated for the difference in costs and sold in the markets. 

The third important cost is the Product Return cost. For all unsold items, HP gives a 100 % return to the distributors. 

The fourth important component is the Obsolescence costs. This is the cost of writing off the cost of unsold items in the inventory, after the life of the products has ended.

The costs listed above accounted for almost 90 % of the inventory related costs incurred by HP. It would be interesting trying to find how to counter these excessive inventory costs.

A beauty, Model T Ford car ..

Challenging the concept of craft production where each car was produced like a job shop activity, all resources and workers gathering around each unit until it is finally assembled and rolled out of the shop floor, mass production helped to standardize production on a large scale to meet with high demand at lower costs ..

Now we find the Lean System ( Toyota Production System) is challenging this production concept. The Japanese are showing the world it is not utilization of machines, men and materials which decides the quality and cost effectiveness of any shop floor operations, product or process, instead trying to keep inventory and wastes low, is the success to any manufacturing. By aiming at unit-continuous-pull flow on the shop floor, Toyota has shown the world they are indeed technologically and theoritically superior to the manufacturing concerns of the western world.

This also explains the craze for western companies to go LEAN, i.e. reduce wastes, provide value, bring pull and run single piece continuous flow ..

However for posterity, here is the first car to be mass produced ... Model T Ford .. A beauty ..

The day the world changed for the Americans ..

The Americans who were polluting the world like never before (in all sense of the word..), oblivious of the rest 5.65 billion people out there, got a shock of their lives. America was changed for ever ..!! Unless it changed, it was doomed for ever !!


9/11 attack on WTC, 8 years to this day ..



And change it did ! Today it is more tolerable, has less of money in households to pollute, is moving with a begging bowl to other countries asking for help to lift them out of the rotten mess their leader have put them in.

It is said, US with no internal savings and on a spending binge, needs on an average $ 2 billion a day to survive and it depends on countries like China, Japan and the Gulf states to provide them this sustenance allowance by buying US govt securities. If these countries choke this oxygen supply, wonder what will happen !!

September 15 also marks one year of the fall of Lehman Brothers .. The day America was changed for ever !

When Obama was asked recently as with which international personality, living or dead, he would like to have dinner with, pat came Obama's reply. With Gandhiji !!

I am sure this incident has rattled the minds of some people of the world. This incident brings back some stunning revelations !! The world needs to sit back and think, has there been a personality in the past hundred years who has had more profound influence on the world and the struggle for liberty of the blacks and coloured people of the world, than Gandhiji, who through his actions, dogged determination and pursuit of non-violence and truth had earned for the world eternal liberty from fear and racial dominance. I doubt anybody else can claim that spot.. No wonder Einsten remarked : "Generations to come, it may be, will scarce believe that such one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth"


That frail, half naked fakir, has changed the world for ever. He has given Obama the right to rule US by inspiring Martin Luther King to fight for the liberty of the blacks of US. He has inspired Nelson Mandela to suffer long prison terms, all in the name of freedom for his country men from the tyranny of the white rule and Indians to grow and prosper in peace ....

Let us not forget this great and noble personality whose 140th birth anniversary is falling on the 2 nd of October.

Muthootu murder takes new turn ...


The famed Paul Muthootu murder in Alleppey, Kerala is getting murkier day by day.

Asianet TV through a sting operation recorded from the goldsmith who made the S shaped knife. as per news reports, the police CI later placed this knife under the pillow of Kari Satheesh in his house. Kari is being framed by the police as having committed the murder. Kari's mother was on TV denying all the charges and accusing the police of planting the knife under the cushion of her son ..

The involvement of the police, Government and the Muthootu family in trying to hush up the case as an accidental murder and not a planned one is getting exposed with each passing day by the brilliant revelations made public by the media. The fact that the DGP of Alleppey on the second day itself called a press conference to brief the media and the public of the police intentions to hush up the case, when he should not have influenced in any way the progress of the case, is a false step. The Kerala High Court had criticised the Police Dept for committing this anomaly. Will any heads roll in the police dept ?

How can we trust the Kerala Police anymore ?? Why is the police and the govt not interested in bring the murderers of Paul George to face justice ? Have they been bribed by some industrial houses or politicians to hush up the issue ? Kerala will heave a sigh of relief if any of the so called big business sharks are liquidated ..

Whoever has used the goondas for their rapid and unjust growth in Kerala by catching at the throat of the poor man, is now facing reprisals from the same goondas ?

With the police also hand in gloves with the murderers, can we expect this case to see the light of the day in the near future ? Or will it be hushed up like the many other cases which the Kerala Police is so famous for ..

Big is back - Economist 27 August 09 ..



IN 1996, in one of his most celebrated phrases, Bill Clinton declared that "the era of big government is over". He might have added that the era of big companies was over, too. The organisation that defined capitalism for much of the 20th century was then in retreat, attacked by corporate raiders, harassed by shareholders and outfoxed by entrepreneurs.
Great names such as Pan Am had disappeared. Others had survived only by dint of huge bloodletting: IBM sacked 122,000 people, a quarter of its workforce, between 1990 and 1995. Everyone agreed that the future lay with entrepreneurial start-ups such as Yahoo!—which in late 1998 had the same market capitalisation with 637 employees as Boeing with 230,000. The share of GDP produced by big industrial companies fell by half between 1974 and 1998, from 36% to 17%.
Today the balance of advantage may be shifting again. To a degree, the financial crisis is responsible. It has devastated the venture-capital market, the lifeblood of many young firms. Governments have been rescuing companies they consider too big to fail, such as Citigroup and General Motors. Recession is squeezing out smaller and less well-connected firms. But there are other reasons too, which are giving big companies a self-confidence they have not displayed for decades.

Big can be beautiful…

Of course, big companies never went away. There were still plenty of first-rate ones: Unilever and Toyota continued to innovate through thick and thin. And not all start-ups were models of success: Netscape and Enron promised to revolutionise their industries only to crash and burn. Nevertheless, the balance had shifted in favour of small organisations.

But deregulation had already begun to go out of fashion before the financial crisis. The Sarbanes-Oxley act, introduced after Enron collapsed in disgrace, increased the regulatory burden on companies of all sizes, but what could be borne by the big could cripple the small. Many of today's most dynamic industries are much more friendly to big companies than the IT industry. Research in biotechnology is costly and often does not bear fruit for years. Natural-resource companies, whose importance grows as competition for resources intensifies, need to be big—hence the mining industry's consolidation.
The entrepreneurial boom was supercharged by two developments. Deregulation opened protected markets. Some national champions, such as AT&T, were broken up. Others saw their markets eaten up by swift-footed newcomers. The arrival of the personal computer in the 1970s and the internet in the 1990s created an army of successful start-ups. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976 in the Jobs family's garage. Microsoft and Dell Computer were both founded by teenagers (in 1975 and 1984 respectively). Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google in Stanford dorm rooms.
Two further developments are shifting the balance of advantage in favour of size. One is a heightened awareness of the risks of subcontracting. Toy companies and pet-food firms alike have found that their brands can be tainted if their suppliers (notably, from China) turn out shoddy goods. Big industrial companies have learned that their production cycles can be disrupted if contractors are not up to the mark. Boeing, once a champion of outsourcing, has been forced to take over faltering suppliers.
A second is the emergence of companies that have discovered how to be entrepreneurial as well as big. These giants are getting better at minimising the costs of size (such as longer, more complex chains of managerial command) while exploiting its advantages (such as presence in several markets and access to a large talent pool). Cisco Systems is pioneering the use of its own video technology to improve communications between its employees (see article). IBM has carried out several company-wide brainstorming exercises, recently involving more than 150,000 people, that have encouraged it to put more emphasis, for example, on green computing. Disney has successfully ingested Pixar's creative magic.
You might suppose that the return of the mighty, now better equipped to crush the competition, is something to worry about. Not necessarily. Big is not always ugly just as small is not always beautiful. Most entrepreneurs dream of turning their start-ups into giants (or at least of selling them to giants for a fortune). There is a symbiosis between large and small. "Cloud computing" would not provide young firms with access to huge amounts of computer power if big companies had not created giant servers. Biotech start-ups would go bust were they not given work by giants with deep pockets.
The most successful economic ecosystems contain a variety of big and small companies: Silicon Valley boasts long-established names as well as an ever-changing array of start-ups. America's economy has been more dynamic than Europe's in recent decades not just because it is better at giving birth to companies but also because it is better at letting them grow. Only 5% of European Union companies born since 1980 have made it into the list of the 1,000 biggest in the EU by market capitalisation. In America, the figure is 22%.

…but size isn't really what matters

The return of the giants could well be a boon for the world economy—but only if business people and policymakers avoid certain pitfalls. Businesses should not make a fetish of size, particularly if this means diversifying into a lot of unrelated areas. The conglomerate model may be tempting when cash is hard to find. But the moment will not last. By and large, the most successful big firms focus on their core businesses.
Policymakers should both resist an instinctive suspicion of big companies (seearticle) and avoid the old error of embracing national champions. It is bad enough that governments have diverted resources into propping up failing companies such as General Motors. It would be even more regrettable if they were to return to picking winners. The best use of their energies is to remove the burdens and barriers which prevent entrepreneurs from starting businesses and turning small companies into big ones.

70 years back to this day .. !!


It was on September 1, 1939, German army opened fire in the Polish port of Gdansk. Ahead of her departure to Gdansk, to mark the 70 th anniversary of the start of WWII, Angela MerkEl, Chancellor of Germany told on German TV, "Germany attacked Poland, Germany started World War II. We caused unending suffering in the world. Sixty million dead ... was the result,".


History if not read. analysed and understood in its entirety by the young generation, may lead to more such blunders in future. Sixty million dead is not a small figure..  


In India, the left led by the 'lone' Marxists and the right led by the RSS and BJP, pursued by dogmatic ideologies pose the greatest threat to the nation, even in the midst of positive trends in growth and development figures released by the Govt.

The most important lesson of all this is, to be on ETERNAL VIGIL !! The most demanding price one has to pay for DEMOCRACY !!

The Internet, that all encompoassing communication, entretainment, informative medium is turning 40 tomorrow. It was on 2 nd Sept, 1969 that two computers at the Kelinrock lab in UCLA exchanged data through a ten feet long cable.

Later in 1972, Ray Tomlinson brings e-mail to exchange data between systems and users on these systems using the @ sign to signify the systems.

1973 Arpanet goes international with nodes in UK and Norway

Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn develop the TCP/IP in 1974 to communicate between computers connected to any network.

1983, Domain name system gets into place.

1990 Tim Berners Lee develops the World Wide Web, the integrate multi media and text on the internet

1993, Mark Andressen and his colleagues at UIUC ( University of Illinois) develop the first web browser, Mosaic

1994, the same group develop the first commercial browser, Netscape Navigator

1998, Google is formed in Stanford Uty Dorm.

1999 - Napster makes music file sharing popular and changes the world of music and Internet for ever !!

2005 Youtube, video file sharing is introduced

From 2000 wireless Internet access is introduced with suitable communication 811 protocols became popular..

2007 Aple's iphone, introduces millions to wireless internet access

So far  the world internet users population has been doubling every four years ( app..) From 250 m in 1999, it went to 500 m in 2002, 1 billion in 2006 and is now 1.5 b in 2008.

Talk on Risk Management in Projects in XIME ..

It was good listening to Mr Suryaprakash, Vice President Info Systems and Narendra, Delivery Manager and Head Risk management, Infosys talking to second year students of PGDM in XIME on Risk management on 31 August 2009. Hearing it right from the horse's mouth as to the importance Infy assigns to Risk management from the bidding stage to the handing over stage of the project, was very eye opening for the students. It gaye an idea of how Infosys works.

Developing a risk culture within the organisation with no penalties for failing in high risk projects was the best way Infy tackled risk in the organisation. Learning from earlier projects and identifying new risk areas was the mantra to be successful in projects.

Compared to the Industry standard where only 33 % of projects are successful having met requirements of time and within costs, the Infy experience of a success rate of 95 % plus is a reflection of their customer focus and the commitment to deliver on time...

It was really great listening to an exciting talk from Mr. Bijou Kurien, President and Chief Executive of Reliance Retail in XIME today at 3.30 PM. An alumni of XLRI, Jamshedpur, Bijou after passing from XLRI in 1981 worked as Product Manager in Hindustan Unilever before joining Titan Industries, He worked in Titan for 18 long years branding Titan as a house hold name and quit Titan as its COO to join Reliance Retail in 2007.

His talk on branding was a classy one .. something incomparable. Super compering by Akhil and Akshay's final parting words were great ..

The parasites of the society, the politicians need to be told that they are the leaders of the people not demigods .. The pressure they bring on the normal law abiding citizens who are magnanimous enough to relax rules and provide security to these rascals are being taken for a ride by these same people.

The netas in our country with the sportspersons and filmstars are making a fool of themselves by shouting like crybabies when normal routines carried out on any individual is done on them at airpots. Flanking around with gun toting security guards, at the expense of the tax paying citizens of the country, these parasites get immense satisfaction blocking traffic and causing inconvenience to the public in public places. It is high time, the government reduced the security being given to such parasites. If they are killed by their enemies, it is only good for the country and law will take its course , like it does for the common citizens.

Visit to Taegu Tech, Bommasandra


I never thought I would get such an opportunity in life..

With the American students and faculty from Uty of Akron and Uty of Redlands, Calif, when I visited the cutting tools manufacturing company Taegu Tech in Bommasandra, Bangalore on the hosur Road, little did I realise that this visit was very important.

Even though I had learnt during my engg college days that machine tool life can be increased (decreasing cutting costs) by using inserts, this was the first time I was getting to see all this in real life. Visiting the shop floor of TaeguTech in Bommasandra was very interesting.

The cleanliness of the place was mind boggling. When the team lead of the marketing dept was saying in his presentation that this was one of the best machine tool manufacturing shop floors in the world, little did i believe it, till I saw the shop floor.

With the latest CNC controlled machines, robots and complicated flexible manufacturing systems,  the experience was beyond belief.

The American faculty who came along with us could not believe their eyes and stared in disbelief at the machines and the neatly and organised shop floor of Tagu tech in Bangalore. Started as a subsidiary of Daegu tech in South Korea in 2001 in Bommasandra it has a financial turnover of about 160 crores, but has already captured 65 % of the Indian machine tool market.

While US is trying its strategy thru the AfPak region, it benefits India as more Indian troops can now be concentrated on its Eastern border with China. 

The $ 3 trillions which US wasted in Iraq and is trying hard to gain a respectable exit from, only boosted Iran's stronghold in the region, much to the chagrin of US. Ensuring unfettered access to the oil passing thru the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic agenda for the US to retain its strong foothold in the region.

The Real Hero showing the spirit of Mumbai ..

 

Suvendu Roy of Titan Industries shares his inspirational encounter with a rickshaw driver in Mumbai:
Last Sunday, my wife, kid, and I had to travel to Andheri from Bandra.
When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that this ride would be any different...

As we set off, my eyes fell on a few magazines (kept in an aircraft style pouch) behind the driver's back rest.

 


I looked in front and there was a small TV. The driver had put on the Doordarshan channel.

 


My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some medicines.
This was enough for me to realise that I was in a special vehicle.

Then I looked round again, and discovered more - there was a radio, fire extinguisher, wall clock, calendar, and pictures and symbols of all faiths
- from Islam and Christianity to  Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.

There were also pictures of the heroes of 26/11- Kamte, Salaskar, Karkare and Unnikrishnan.

I realised that not only my vehicle, but also my driver was special.

I started chatting with him and the initial sense of ridicule and disbelief gradually diminished.

I gathered that he had been driving an auto rickshaw for the past 8-9 years; he had lost his job when his employer's plastic company was shut down.

He had two school-going children, and he drove from 8 in the morning till 10 at night.

No break unless he was unwell.  "Sahab, ghar mein baith ke T.V dekh kar kya faida? Do paisa income karega toh future mein kaam aayega."

We realised that we had come across a man who represents Mumbai the spirit of work, the spirit of travel and the spirit of excelling in life.
I asked him whether he does anything else as I figured that he did not have too much spare time.

He said that he goes to an old age home for women in Andheri once a week or whenever he has some extra income, where he donates tooth  brushes, toothpastes, soap,  hair oil, and other items of daily use.

He pointed out to a painted message below the meter that read: "25 per cent discount on metered fare for the handicapped.

Free rides for blind passengers up to Rs. 50.

 



My wife and I were struck with awe. The man was a HERO!

 

A hero who deserves all our respect!!!

 

Our journey came to an end;

 

45 minutes of a lesson in humility, selflessness, and of a hero-worshipping Mumbai, my temporary home.

 

We disembarked, and all I could do was to pay him a tip that would hardly cover a free ride for a blind man.

 

I hope, one day, you too have a chance to meet Mr Sandeep Bachhe in his auto rickshaw: MH-02-Z-8508.

Sri Ram Sene playing truant ..


With the Karnataka police revealing reluctantly that it was the Sri Ram Sene, which threw pig caracas at a Muslim Madrasa in Mysore which led to communal clashes in Mysore and the death of innocent citizens, the ploy of these anti national elements in disturbing the peace in society, is getting clearer day by day.

Let us hope the leaders of these communities understand the threat it poses to the growth and development of the country, in this crucial phase in its march to development and world leadership.

Rising with the tide !!

 China and India will likely defy the economic malaise in Western
 economies and grow at more than 7% this year. But that is where the
 comparison should end. Contrary to popular hype, India is actually
 outpacing China where it counts most -- the economic growth of the
 rural poor.
 
 Half of China's population and two-thirds of India's still live in
 rural areas -- roughly 700 million people in each country, most of
 whom remain poor. In China, the urban-rural income ratio has become
 increasingly disparate; it was 1.8 times more in the mid-1980s, 2.4 in
 the mid-1990s, 2.9 in 2001 and now around 3.5.
 
 This trend starkly contrasts with the early years of Chinese economic
 reform. Over 80% of the poverty reduction in China occurred during
 Deng Xiaoping's reforms, between 1978 and 1988. Although per-capita
 incomes have risen since then, the net incomes of about 400 million
 people have declined over the past decade.
 
 India started from a lower economic base but has made greater gains:
 Its urban-rural income gap has slowly but steadily declined since the
 early 1990s. Over the past decade, economic growth in rural India has
 outpaced growth in urban areas by almost 40%. Rural India now accounts
 for half of the country's GDP, up from 46% in 1993. Unlike the
 Chinese, rural Indians do not have to migrate to already crowded urban
 areas to earn a better living.
 
 These trends mirror the path of economic reform in both nations. China
 had a huge head start in alleviating poverty. It began free-market
 reforms in 1978, while India only started on its current journey away
 from socialism toward a market-based system in the early 1990s. Since
 the turn of the century, India has been rapidly improving, but China
 has been getting worse. And since 2000, poverty and illiteracy in
 India have halved, while the same figures doubled in China.
 
 The role of domestic consumption in the economy also demonstrates the
 divergent paths of these two developing giants. In China, domestic
 consumption as a proportion of GDP has fallen to 35% from around 60%
 in the 1980s. The Chinese "economic miracle" depends mostly on exports
 and state-led fixed investment. Even Beijing consistently admits this
 is an unbalanced, unsustainable strategy. Moreover, depressed
 consumption levels and correspondingly high levels of savings by the
 citizens of a still-poor country mean growth is uneven and benefits
 relatively few. In contrast, domestic consumption composes more than
 two-thirds of the Indian economy. India has a lot of catching up to
 do, but its poor are rising with the tide, unlike in China.
 
 China's emphasis on state-led fixed-investment growth in urban areas
 may have fostered this trend, exacerbating inequality and heavily
 favoring a relatively small number of well-placed insiders. After the
 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing decided the state should
 reassert its control of economic growth, which had rested on
 private-sector entrepreneurship. Before Tiananmen, private-sector
 investment growth in rural China was growing at 20% annually. After
 Tiananmen, it dropped to 7%. Hundreds of millions of Chinese have
 since missed out on the fruits of the country's spectacular growth.
 
 The Chinese and Indian development models are not actually in
 competition, despite what newspaper headlines and books may suggest.
 But as magnificent as Shanghai now is, its shiny buildings have been
 built on the backs of peasants forced to deposit their savings into
 state-owned banks and receiving little in return. In contrast, India
 started its reforms 15 years later than China but is quietly and
 gradually building its base. Now that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is
 starting his second term, he will do well to reject the dangerous
 appeal of the Chinese approach.
 
 Mr. Lee is a foreign-policy fellow at the Centre for Independent
 Studies in Sydney, a visiting scholar at the Hudson Institute in
 Washington. (CIS, 2008).

Open admission by Zardari of US complicity in the Af-Pak region ..


What a way to own up responsibility ?? President Zardari of Pakistan has finally shown the courage the accept that terrorism and extremism were supported by the Pakistani state as a deliberate, sytemic ploy to achieve tactical goals ...

We need to understand what these tactical goals are ..

The US pressure to show India in bad light during the seventies and eighties, as we maintained a close rapport with USSR than US, had forced the Pak authorities who were under US patronage and funding, to turn their guns and intelligence agencies against India to cause maximum damage. To realise later that such a policy has not paid off and would do more damage to US and Pakistan than anybody else took some time. Democracy has such relief valves whereby policies of one administration are completely overturned by the succeeding one and re-introduced by the following one !!.

The realisation that India is a world power in the reckoning, set to achieve super power status, has forced US and its allies in Pakistan to understand that such tactics of guerilla, proxy warfare would not payoff, but cause more damage to Pakistan than anybody else. Such open admissions of guilt and "mea culpa" by Pakistan reinforces Indian stand throughout of a defensive policy than an offensive policy with regard to its small, fragile and terribly vulnerable neighbour Pakistan. Our patience has been tested time and again by the Pak leaders and their supporters from US.

This admission of guilt by Pakistan President, should make the US bow its head in shame as US has been a major power broker in this region during the seventies n eighties, propping up the Taliban and extremism in Pakistan as a state sponsored policy to face the Soviet threat.


Openly holding the US responsible for Talibanisation of the Af-Pak regions and growth of Al-Qaeda will indeed cause lot of heartburn in the US and self-introspection as to its diminishing influence in the region. 

After all, everyday is not a Sunday !! And one day, every nation will reap the consequencces of its actions, good or bad, abetting or partnering in crime..  How fast one realises it is the only question remaining unanswered !
