I have great pleasure in introducing to you a great academic luminary of our city of Bangalore, the former Dean of Academics at Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, Prof Trilochan Sastry.
Prof Sastry by virtue of his brilliant academic qualifications has risen to the highest academic position in one of the country's premier academic institution , IIM Bangalore.
After completing his B. Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, he went to IIM Ahmedabad for his PGDM - MBA degree. After graduating from IIMA in 1981, Prof Sastry headed straight to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston US to complete Ph.D. His love for motherland and passion to lift the poor and downtrodden from poverty made him come back to the country to take up an assignment of teaching at IIMA.
Like Swami Vivekananda, who happens to be his deepest inspiration in life, Prof Sastry believes in giving back to people their lost individuality and restoring the dignity of the people who have been treated with contempt for many centuries.
Prof. Sastry filed the Public Interest Litigation in SC for the first time in the country against the political class who were taking the citizens for a ride. After a prolonged struggle of 4 years finally he got the politicians of our land to declare their assets, liabilities, academic qualifications and criminal records. He is the main force behind the National Election watch working towards a cleaner Indian electoral system. The site myneta.info has been released to keep track of our politicians and to bring probity into our electoral system.
After moving to Indian School of Business, Hyderabad in 2001, Prof Sastry got to do what he liked the most, serving the people. He set up the country's first farmer's co-operative called the Centre for Collective Development or Sahakar Mitra Sanstha.. Acting to eliminate middle men in the agri supply chain, he has succeeded in helping farmers realise higher prices for their farm produce and a share of the cooperative's profits. This has resulted in the farmer seeing his income increase by almosy Rs 2000 per month. This is working effectively in two districts of Andhra Pradesh, covering 80 villages and impacting almost 2000 people.
Prof Sastry moved as a faculty member of IIM Bangalore in 2003 and is at present Professor and Dean Academic Programme. Prof Sastry is also a member of the Board of Governors of the Institute.
At the World Economic Form his interests are cited as Governance, Democracy, electoral reforms, poverty alleviation and human development, Nothing related to academic and Operations Management, his strong areas. When Prof Sastry is not writing papers and attending conferences, he is seen with the farmers of AP helping get back their lost individuality and dignity.
As a lover of William Shakespeare, Carnatic music and cricket, he is getting ready to pen his books on politics and poverty. At age 50, Professor Sastry continues to remain a bachelor.
Here we see a Professor who is an ocean away from the commercial world of IIMs and sky high compensations. He loves working for the less fortunate and downtrodden in the society.
All for the sake of clean politics ..
