Floating nuclear reactors .. from The Economist ..

Like a nuclear-powered ship can float on water, why not a floating 1000 MegaWatt Light Water nuclear reactor, given our expertise in building offshore oil platforms ..

With plenty of cooling water around (an infinite heat sink), there should be no fear of the 2011 Fukushima repeat ! Earthquake and Tsunami swells could be contained in 100m deep moorings .. Dismantling and decommissioning could be done after towing to landbased decommissioning yards.

With proper safety units and regulations to prevent leakages and underwater attacks, the idea could be a reality for Rosatom, the Russian energy co. building the 70 MW floating nuclear power plant to be completed in 2016.

Great idea ..

George..
