Great quotes on Feedback ..

Feedback is an essential part of effective learning. It helps students understand the subject beingstudied and gives them clear guidance on how to improve their learning. It is stated that 'academic feedback is more strongly and consistently related to achievement than any other teaching behaviour...this relationship is consistent regardless of grade, socioeconomic status, race, or school setting.' Feedback can improve a student's confidence, self-awareness and enthusiasm for learning. Effective feedback during the first year in university can aid the transition to higher education and may support student retention. Providing students engage with feedback, it should enhance learning and improve assessment performance.- University of Reading.

American gun related deaths, 2015.

Uncontrollable American gun epidemic !!

18,508 gun related deaths in the first 7 months of 2015 ! Roughly 2700 deaths every month for a population of 314 million, one fourth of Indian population.

US kills it's own citizens at a rate of 1.2 per million population every month ! Avoidable cruelty to its people ..

US pokes it's ugly nose everywhere bossing around, in the guise of protecting its citizens (0 deaths from terrorist attacks) but cannot check this epidemic and protect its own  citizens from this homegrown malaise !

What makes Google special ?

Google is a dream organisation for most of us. What makes Google so special ?

Is it that Google has made our lives very easy, be it search or mail or youtube videos..

We had an excellent discussion today on the Google case in class this morning.

Though Google is more known for its excellent employee policies, creative, innovative work environment, it is also a company which believes in growing at a fast pace. Almost 182 inorganic acquisitions till date.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Google

The discussion in the class was based on these questions which we came across in the case.

1. How does Google ensure these inorganic acquisitions add value to the Google brand ?

2. How is Google IT infrastructure keeping pace with its customer expectations and demand ?

3. What are Google IT policies to maintain costs low ?

4. How does Google intend to automate the system admin function ?

5. Google tries for very high reliability (5 nines) 99.999 %. How and why not 6 nines ?

6. As services grow, how does Google manage to keep its costs sub-linear. ?

7. How does Google ensure it gets the smartest people to work for it ?

8. How does Google ensure its employees share and discuss ideas ?

9. Mention about Employee equality inside Google.

10. Why is minimal distraction important in Google environment ?

11. How are Nooglers trained to understand the Google culture ?

12. How does Google move forward and "fast" with technology ?

13. Why does Google maintain a flat non-hierarchical organisation structure ?

14. Why and how does Google give a small company feel to its employees ?

15. Why is it difficult or easy to adapt to Google culture of innovation ?

16. How does Google motivate its employees to give their best ?

17. Why does Google believe in "power of ideas" and not seniority in the organisation ?

Can container based housing solve Mumbai's housing woes ?

Could this be a solution to counter the growing scarcity of living space, not only in Dharavi, Mumbai - the world's largest slum, but in other places as well ?

Structural stability, effective drainage, waste recycling and the need for cooling in summer are major hurdles.

But man's innovation has no limits ! Very soon an effective cheap solution will surface ..

Cochin International Airport becomes first in the world to operate fully on solar power

Kochi International airport is the 4 th largest Indian int'l airport and is the first International airport in the world to completely run on solar power. Let me just remind you that India is world's third largest polluter too after China and US.

Needing 48,000 electrical units (KWh) daily, CIAL installed a 12 MW solar plant of 46,000 solar panels, able to deliver 50,000 units/day of green power.

Took 6 months to complete, $10 million to be recovered in 5 years in the cost of electricity which would be produced. This airport thus is not only technically superior, it is a commercially viable one  too ..

With a lifespan of 25 years saving 300,000 MT CO2 emission every year, it is equivalent to planting 3 million trees ..

CIAL MD, V J Kurien, IAS.
Great initiative carried with technical collaboration with Bosch India.

Can central Govt, state govt offices and educational institutions across the state and country emulate this ? CIAL MD, VJ Kurien is much in demand now !

It has been officially confirmed that India's Kochi International airport is the first completely solar powered airport in the world .. What an innovation !!

Probably this can kick start many other gigantic critical applications elsewhere in the world to run on solar energy ..
Germany which attempted to be among the forerunners in adopting solar energy had a bad experience .. Check the link ..

Beer Game blog links..

I have been playing the Beer Distribution Game for the past eight years starting from IIT Bombay with Prof. Narayan Rangaraj around 1998 and later on at many Institutes, including the many batches of the country's largest SCM managers who come for training at the Armed Supply Corps(ASC) HQ College in Bangalore India for about three years now.

These are links to blogs I have written over the years after playing the Beer Distribution game to understand the distribution side dynamics in a supply chain.

Pl feel free to go thru the links and get loads of learning. Click here for the scoring sheet ..

Thanks to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT at Boston (Prof. J. Forrester, Industrial Dynamics) for developing and popularising this game in the late 50s and later in early 70s..

Here is an MIT Technology Review write-up of how the Beer Game is played and analysed at MIT ..

HH Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma - greatest of all Travancore Kings.

Sri Padmanabhadasa Maharajah Sri Anizham Tirunal
Veera Bala Marthanda Varma Kulashekhara Perumal
HH Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma (1706-1758 AD).

The greatest of all Travancore Kings, the only Indian King to defeat both Dutch and English (at Colachel), the daring King  responsible for collecting all the riches at Sri Padmanabhaswamy  temple as the spoils of war collected from the defeated Dutch and British armies ..

Family records have it that the boy king (Anizham Tirunal) when hounded by the ettuveettil pillamaar landed at our Chittundayil  family house in Adoor in 1715 AD in disguise as a beggar. My great great ... grandmother offered the beggar boy rice gruel which he declined and went to our neighbour Nellimmoottil family. The mother there quickly recognised the beggar boy, treated him well and allowed him to stay there for three days after which he went back to Trivandrum side and reclaimed his Royal title after battle in a few years time.

HH Anizham Tirunal Marthanda Varma ( 1706 - 1758 AD)
Land records say that after a few years of return to power, excess land running to hundreds of acres of land with our Chittundayil family was taken away and gifted tax free to Nellimmoottil family.

Nellmoottil family still has the various presents and gifts showered by HH Anizham Tirunal in their possession, though scattered.

Great research material on HH Anizham Tirunal ..

Ducks quack, eagles soar !! The power of choice !!

Ducks Quack, Eagles Soar !! - The power of choice !!
I was waiting in line for a ride at the airport. When a cab pulled up, the first thing I noticed was that the taxi was polished to a bright shine. Smartly dressed in a white shirt, black tie, and freshly pressed black slacks, the cab driver jumped out and rounded the car to open the back passenger door for me. He handed me a laminated card and said: 'I'm Wasu, your driver. While I'm loading your bags in the trunk I'd like you to read my mission statement.'
Taken aback, I read the card. It said: Wasu's Mission Statement:
To get my customers to their destination in the quickest, safest and cheapest way possible in a friendly environment.
This blew me away. Especially when I noticed that the inside of the cab matched the outside. Spotlessly clean!
As he slid behind the wheel, Wasu said, 'Would you like a cup of coffee? I have a thermos of regular and one of decaf.'
I said jokingly, 'No, I'd prefer a soft drink.'
Wasu smiled and said, 'No problem. I have a cooler up front with regular and Diet Coke, lassi, water and orange juice.'
Almost stuttering, I said, 'I'll take a Lassi.'
Handing me my drink, Wasu said, 'If you'd like something to read, I have The Hindu, Times  of India, ET and India Today.'
As they were pulling away, Wasu handed me another laminated card, 'These are the stations I get and the music they play, if you'd like to listen to the radio.'
And as if that weren't enough, Wasu told me that he had the air conditioning on and asked if the temperature was comfortable for him.
Then he advised me of the best route to my destination for that time of day. He also let me know that he'd be happy to chat and tell me about some of the sights or, if I preferred, to leave me with my own thoughts.
'Tell me, Wasu,' I was amazed and asked him, 'have you always served customers like this?'  Wasu smiled into the rear view mirror. 'No, not always. In fact, it's only been in the last two years. My first five years driving, I  spent most of my time complaining like all the rest of the cabbies do. Then I heard about power of choice one day.'
'Power of choice is that you can be a duck or an eagle.'
'If you get up in the morning expecting to have a bad day, you'll rarely disappoint yourself. Stop complaining!'
'Don't be a duck. Be an eagle. Ducks quack and complain. Eagles soar above the crowd.'
'That hit me right,' said Wasu.
'It is about me. I was always quacking and complaining, so I decided to change my attitude and become an eagle. I looked around at the other cabs and their drivers. The cabs were dirty, the drivers were unfriendly, and the customers were unhappy. So I decided to make some changes. I put in a few at a time. When my customers responded well, I did more.'
'I take it that has paid off for you,' I said.
'It sure has,' Wasu replied. 'My first year as an eagle, I doubled my income from the previous year. This year I'll probably quadruple it. My customers call me for appointments on my cell phone or leave a message on it.'
Wasu made a different choice. He decided to stop quacking like ducks and start soaring like eagles.

What attracted me to Dr Kalam most ?

The world media has been going head over heels to offer their paens to Dr Kalam.

Dr Kalam's knowledge of science and technology created awe in the population, his assuming Presidency of the country brought respect, his scholarly writings for the youth glowed in concern for the environment and society, his concern for the growth of the nation endeared all sections of politicians to him, but what he will be remembered for posterity is none of these qualities.

What endeared the people to Dr Kalam or Dr Kalam to the people was his SIMPLICITY and easy APPROACHABILITY..

Yes, our Kalam saab will remain in our hearts for along time to come for his great simplicity.

Watch "ISRO will surpass NASA by 2020 - Jai Ho India" on YouTube

Forget NASA, forget ESA, forget Roscosmos and others.

NASA has still not come out of the reverberations of the "cost /performance shock" of the Mangalyaan - Maven Mars sojourn and will never ever be competition to ISRO !!

Never in their wildest dreams can NASA or others ever think of competing with ISRO on costs, innovation, planning, competence and street smartness !!

I give ISRO an eight year window to give leadership to the world.

Finally the question is - who will make planet earth a better place to spend a human's lifetime ?

APJ Abdul Kalam and Yakub Memon, any comparison ?

Bharat Ratna APJ Abdul Kalam, former Indian President and India's missile man is a towering personality on whose death the whole nation is in grief.

Yakub Memon is an unfortunate Indian citizen whose partering with anti-social elements led to the death of many innocent Indian in Mumbai years back. The law has taken so many years to put him on trial and finally having found guilty has hanged him.

The Indian law is very simple and clear on this - you live a socially beneficial life, beneficial to other members of the society and fulfilling to yourself, India is a great place. But if you indulge in anti social activities, then you are in for trouble.

Fanatics on either side would tend to communalise this issue, but it is not one of that sort. I can only pity with such low intelligent people on either side !

Indian law is very clear, the present Govt whether it tries to protect Maya Kodnani, the architect of the Godhra genocide, law's long arms will catch her one day, like it did with Yakub.

Long live Indian democracy! India is above such temporary communal phenomenon played by both parties. Down with communalists on either side who thrive on blood and violence . India will not succumb to your terror tactics..
