Industry Collaborative Intelligence

Humans have of late been collaborating with Artificial Intelligence to change customer experience across industries..

The link from HBR (click here for very interesting HBR paper) is good reading on how AI and humans are working together to improve the customer experience across industries as diverse as Mercedes automobile manufacturing, Gigster software development, HSBC bank credit card fraud detection, Roche cancer treatment, Unilever recruiting,  GE equipment maintenance, Pfizer healthcare etc ...  These are all cutting edge AI-human collaborative applications ..

Over the weekend I will be speaking on this topic at an industry CEO conclave in Bangalore.

I am also contemplating to have an interesting discussion-cum-role play on the human-AI collaborative intelligence in the MBA sem 4 class in Alliance University this Friday morning, 30 Jan, may be for the first time in India or the world.. Thinking of having a role play in the class, to help students understand the practical impact of the concepts than just the drab theory, where student teams will take important and interesting examples of human-AI collaboration as role plays, given in the above article corresponding to the five elements of
1. flexibility
2. speed
3. scale
4. decision making and
5. personalisation
The role play will involve playing the instance of failure and successful resolution of the cases given in the paper with human-AI collaboration.

Why am I taking up this case of human-AI collaboration in the classroom ?

While discussion the subject of Business Process Reengineering, introduced to the world by Micheal Hammer from MIT, it is clearly understood how the process type approach advocated by Frederick Taylor, father of Modern Scientific Management, was considered inappropriate in comparison to the holistic approach by Micheal Hammer of Business Process Reengineering (BPR) where we look not at improving or eliminating individual processes, but how on the whole, radical thinking can reengineer the process altogether.

From the decades of the 60s to 2020, we find it is Information Technology or more specifically Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that has played an important role in the reengineering approach that provided better value to the customer. At the turn of the second decade of the twenty first century we find Artificial Intelligence is adding value to the human - IT integrated system.

For example, I am just listing three examples from Google / Gmail in our daily life where AI has been impacting our life in a very appreciative way.
1. when we go on the road, AI mediated Google Maps on our smartphones tell us which route to take to avoid the rush, save time and fuel helping us reach our destination anywhere in the world on time and without much tension. More often than not, we reach our destination in the time span predicted by the app initially and in a clear mind. The intelligence displayed by the Google Maps app at times is remarkable.
2. When I need to search for a term on Google, it prefills my enquiries with a number of options on the search window helping me select the correct search terms to arrive at the results faster and easier.
3. When I hit the reply button to any Gmail email, the reply window flashes with three pre-filled reply text buttons which is most closely associated with the mail content. I just have to hit the most appropriate reply and then send it. The reply process that earlier used to take 5 minutes, is now over in a few seconds with help from AI mediated Gmail.
All these developments are just the tip of the iceberg. In the coming days, months and years we will see lots more of such AI-mediated ICT applications flooding the market that is going to make our lives easier and comfortable.

Let's be well prepared so that we do not allow AI to dominate over us, instead all these applications remain within human control. Let us create better awareness on that front.

Business Process Reengineering.. way forward?

Business Process Re-engineering is a much talked about term these days. Ever since Micheal Hammer came up with the initial thought processes in this direction in the early eighties, we have seen a generational shift in processes transforming to centralised computing on Main Frame computers and Minis, then to desktop based distributed computing and now to the Internet mediated cloud computing, which is taking us back to the days of centralised computing
Business process re-engineering is a business management strategy, originally pioneered in the early 1990s, focusing on the analysis and design of workflows and business processes within an organization. Wikipedia
Do you think it is a panacea to remove all business process inefficiencies?

As IT currently, radically helps redesign business processes bringing value and efficiency, do you think in the future Artificial Intelligence will further streamline processes and help realise greater customer value with improved process efficiencies?

*We live in a much deprived world, it is a sin to be inefficient* - Micheal Hammer

Corona virus, do we need to panic ?

The 1918 Spanish flu virus epidemic that hit Europe killed 50 million people ..

Now if Bill Gates prediction is going to turn true, the *Corona virus* pandemic will kill 34 million in the first  6 months of 2020, in just 2 weeks almost 60 people have died in China. The main affected areas will mostly be in India, coastal China, central Europe and Eastern US, which are hot areas of the pandemic spread .. 😳😳😥

In the age of artificial intelligence .. How to compete ?

Every day, we open the newspaper, listen or read some exciting news from the TV or the internet, more frequently than not, we find it has got some thing to do with the paradigm shift that is bound to happen to the world in the coming decades. Yes, we are talking of the massive changes we can expect to hit the world when artificial intelligence (AI) takes over human control in a great percentage of activities which we now are doing.

I happened to go through an enlightening article on how to manage or compete in the age of AI, by Professors Lansiti and Lakhani in HBR Jan 2020 issue.  (click here)

Most of the time non tech geeks try to avoid any discussion on AI as the world is yet to fully understand AI in it's finest form. What to say, I happened to attend a conference by IIM Bangalore on the topic of AI and the future. I was surprised to understand from the IBM engineer who gave us a peek into the world of AI work in IBM, when he mentioned to us that the AI that is presently in use in Indian industries is the chatbot that interacts with any visitor to the company website and helps the visitor to navigate the site and get the required information not listed at the web site.

The article on AI mentions about 2 AI classifications, the weak AI and strong AI. Weak AI refers to the use of AI in tasks carried out by people, including managing Information systems, build, deliver and operate physical IT products, connected by software, that makes up the core of the firm. Humans who were formerly doing this function re conveniently pushed t the edges.

Strong AI, on the other hand is undeveloped yet and still in labs and research refers to simulating human behavior and reasoning skills.

Weak AI applications in the coming days will be impacting the following areas - operations, strategy and competition. Strong data analytical skills will lead to better management of the AI infrastructure and applications.

The essential components of any AI factory will be the following

1. a pipeline, 2. algorithms, 3. experimentation platforms and 4. the hardware and software infrastructure.

EV charging points - large vs small ..

Watch "World's Largest Charging Square in Shenzhen | INSIDE CHINA'S MOBILITY REVOLUTION" on YouTube

Are such large charging points beneficial for the EV industry as a whole ?

Some of my points on the EV industry are are we getting the power from sustainable sources and are we doing proper reuse and recycling of these batteries.

1. power for the batteries presently may be from non-renewable fossil fuels, but once solar and other renewable sources get popular, the whole dynamics will change..

2. 90% of global Lithium resources in Congo are under Chinese control, which may lead to a monopoly... The west may be worried.

3. Let us not also forget that research is on to find better alternatives to li-ion batteries.

4. Batteries are *not use once and throw type*. can be recharged at least 1000 cycles (average 100 kms each cycle) and later recycled for less critical stationary applications etc .. So environmental impact may not be problematic as one thinks.

5. Carefully monitored and properly documented disposal methods have to be resorted to ensure less environmental damage

6. My only concern is - small, decentralized  geographically spread charging stations may be better than such large centralized ones .. 🤔

In future, China can hold the world to ransom  but soon a new battery technology would evolve.

VSSC Trivandrum is doing some cutting edge research in solar energy and have presented it in prestigious conferences around the world.

I also understand that is why ISRO went for solar panels to power the lunar rover Pragyaan in Chandraayan 2 (though that technology could not be tested) over Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTG) that have been used by Russia, US and China on their lunar probes ..
