We are 7 billion ... let's celebrate !!

While it took 250,000 years for the first billion population on planet earth, it took just 12 years to move from 6 billion to 7 billion.

With decreasing fertility of women of the world to less than 2.1 children per woman, the ideal replacement rate, by 2050, we can expect the world population to cross 9 billion and remain steady. We will have a crowded and stable world then ..

During our generation from 1960 onwards, the world population has gone from 3 billion to the present 7 billion. And most of us will live long enough (till 2030, due to increased life expectancy of 65 years, which means on an average we cannot expect to live on this planet for more than eighteen to twenty years) to see world population increase to 8 billion in 2025..

It took 250,000 years for the world population to reach 1 billion in 1800, just 125 years to move to 2 billion in 1925, 35 years to move to 3 billion in 1960. 14 years to move to 4 billion in 1974, 13 years to move to 5 billion, 12 years again to move to 6 billion and another 12 years now to reach 7 billion on 31 October 2011.

Our children would have reached 50 - 60 years by the time world population reaches 9 billion by 2050 !!
