Japanese Production System, especially Toyota Production Systems start by having a properly organised and clean workplace. Who do these 5S stand for ?
5S is a workplace organization method that uses a list of five Japanese words:
seiri - sort (整理),
seiton - set in order (整頓),
seisō - shine (清掃),
seiketsu - standardize (清潔)
shitsuke - sustain (躾).
These have been translated as "sort", "set in order", "shine", "standardize", and "sustain". The list describes how to organize a work space for efficiency and
effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the
area and items, and sustaining the new order. - wikipedia..
It is said 5S is the one single component on a shopfloor which brings in maximum savings on lean implementation. For that matter any lean implementation either on a manufacturing shopfloor or an office should first start with 5S implementation.
