Ruchika and her tormentor ...
If you have a daughter, you will probably be worried how can a Police Officer, a public servant, who is supposed to help keep law and order in the society, turn into a demon and hound minor girls for sexual favours and molest them ??
Should we allow such people to live in a civilised society like ours?
One fact we should never forget is that for one Ruchika whom the world knows, there are a thousand more Ruchikas who have gone into oblivion, at the hands of the demonised police forces.. We need to bring reforms to our police forces and try to lessen the shame the dept as a whole now carries because of some black sheep in their midst.
Rathore should be given the most extreme punishment after giving him a fair hearing .. It is for the safety and safe upbringing of our daughters.

Any better time for Indian cricket ?
M S Dhoni most successful Indian cricket captain, with Sachin, the most prolific cricketer of all time and Virender Sehwag, the cricketer of the decade, all grace the Indian team to make it the world's number one test team !!
Ruchika, Rathore, CBI and Judiciary ..
The monster he was, SPS Rathore could not have gone any further in exerting his official and political influence to subvert the case accusing him of abetting the suicide of Ruchika, and the pursuant terror tactics against her family. His role in influencing CBI oficials to drop serious charges against hime proved successful ( the evasion of Press and the feigning of ignorance of a 10 year old case by former CBI Chief R K Raghavan is an indicator of his complicity in the crime..)
In all seriousness Ruchika' family will get justice and the way things are going, looks like Rathore monster will be going behind bars very soon. The Law Minister Veerappa Moily has been vociferous in asking for the re-trial of the case. Judicial reforms are also being initiated to see that no more such instances recur in India ..
Last evening's Big Fight on NDTV, which was discussing the Ruchika case with anchor Burkha Dutt was an absorbing one with all major players including Ms Kiran Bedi, Ruchika's parents, except Rathore making appearance and unitedly asking for a fair re-trial was the climax for these discussions.

N D Tiwari steps down in disgrace ..
While some of our politicians think that they are unassailable, above law and can continue living in pomp and splendour the rest of their lives, wasting precious public money on their security and luxury, others do lead a sober, meaningful life serving the country. The NDTiwari incident has been a major blot on the Congress party and repairing the damage can take a lot of time.
The rise and fall of N D Tiwari is another example of the famous quote by Lord Acton, 'Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely !!'
The disgraceful stepping down of L K Advani as the leader of BJP, after being accused by Liberhan Commission of bringing the nation to the verge of communal discord and anarchy is another example of how selfish politicians with misguided childhood upbringing, misuse the gullible and educated public for their personal, petty benefits in the name of ideology.

Ford Model-T car
A beauty, Model T Ford car .. |
Now we find the Lean System ( Toyota Production System) is challenging this production concept. The Japanese are showing the world it is not utilization of machines, men and materials which decides the quality and cost effectiveness of any shop floor operations, product or process, instead trying to keep inventory and wastes low, is the success to any manufacturing. By aiming at unit-continuous-pull flow on the shop floor, Toyota has shown the world they are indeed technologically and theoritically superior to the manufacturing concerns of the western world.
This also explains the craze for western companies to go LEAN, i.e. reduce wastes, provide value, bring pull and run single piece continuous flow ..
However for posterity, here is the first car to be mass produced ... Model T Ford .. A beauty ..

The day the world changed for the Americans ..
And change it did ! Today it is more tolerable, has less of money in households to pollute, is moving with a begging bowl to other countries asking for help to lift them out of the rotten mess their leader have put them in.
It is said, US with no internal savings and on a spending binge, needs on an average $ 2 billion a day to survive and it depends on countries like China, Japan and the Gulf states to provide them this sustenance allowance by buying US govt securities. If these countries choke this oxygen supply, wonder what will happen !!

Big is back - Economist 27 August 09 ..
Big can be beautiful…
But deregulation had already begun to go out of fashion before the financial crisis. The Sarbanes-Oxley act, introduced after Enron collapsed in disgrace, increased the regulatory burden on companies of all sizes, but what could be borne by the big could cripple the small. Many of today's most dynamic industries are much more friendly to big companies than the IT industry. Research in biotechnology is costly and often does not bear fruit for years. Natural-resource companies, whose importance grows as competition for resources intensifies, need to be big—hence the mining industry's consolidation. The entrepreneurial boom was supercharged by two developments. Deregulation opened protected markets. Some national champions, such as AT&T, were broken up. Others saw their markets eaten up by swift-footed newcomers. The arrival of the personal computer in the 1970s and the internet in the 1990s created an army of successful start-ups. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak founded Apple Computer in 1976 in the Jobs family's garage. Microsoft and Dell Computer were both founded by teenagers (in 1975 and 1984 respectively). Larry Page and Sergey Brin started Google in Stanford dorm rooms.

Ahead of her departure to Gdansk, to mark the 70 th anniversary of the start of WWII, Angela MerkEl, Chancellor of Germany told on German TV, "Germany attacked Poland, Germany started World War II. The Real Hero showing the spirit of Mumbai ..
Suvendu Roy of Titan Industries shares his inspirational encounter with a rickshaw driver in Mumbai:
Last Sunday, my wife, kid, and I had to travel to Andheri from Bandra.
When I waved at a passing auto rickshaw, little did I expect that this ride would be any different...
As we set off, my eyes fell on a few magazines (kept in an aircraft style pouch) behind the driver's back rest.
I looked in front and there was a small TV. The driver had put on the Doordarshan channel.
My wife and I looked at each other with disbelief and amusement. In front of me was a small first-aid box with cotton, dettol and some medicines.
This was enough for me to realise that I was in a special vehicle.
Then I looked round again, and discovered more - there was a radio, fire extinguisher, wall clock, calendar, and pictures and symbols of all faiths
- from Islam and Christianity to Buddhism, Hinduism and Sikhism.
There were also pictures of the heroes of 26/11- Kamte, Salaskar, Karkare and Unnikrishnan.
I realised that not only my vehicle, but also my driver was special.
I started chatting with him and the initial sense of ridicule and disbelief gradually diminished.
I gathered that he had been driving an auto rickshaw for the past 8-9 years; he had lost his job when his employer's plastic company was shut down.
He had two school-going children, and he drove from 8 in the morning till 10 at night.
No break unless he was unwell. "Sahab, ghar mein baith ke T.V dekh kar kya faida? Do paisa income karega toh future mein kaam aayega."
We realised that we had come across a man who represents Mumbai – the spirit of work, the spirit of travel and the spirit of excelling in life.
I asked him whether he does anything else as I figured that he did not have too much spare time.
He said that he goes to an old age home for women in Andheri once a week or whenever he has some extra income, where he donates tooth brushes, toothpastes, soap, hair oil, and other items of daily use.
He pointed out to a painted message below the meter that read: "25 per cent discount on metered fare for the handicapped.
Free rides for blind passengers up to Rs. 50.
My wife and I were struck with awe. The man was a HERO!
A hero who deserves all our respect!!!
Our journey came to an end;
45 minutes of a lesson in humility, selflessness, and of a hero-worshipping Mumbai, my temporary home.
We disembarked, and all I could do was to pay him a tip that would hardly cover a free ride for a blind man.
I hope, one day, you too have a chance to meet Mr Sandeep Bachhe in his auto rickshaw: MH-02-Z-8508.

Rising with the tide !!
China and India will likely defy the economic malaise in Western
economies and grow at more than 7% this year. But that is where the
comparison should end. Contrary to popular hype, India is actually
outpacing China where it counts most -- the economic growth of the
rural poor.
Half of China's population and two-thirds of India's still live in
rural areas -- roughly 700 million people in each country, most of
whom remain poor. In China, the urban-rural income ratio has become
increasingly disparate; it was 1.8 times more in the mid-1980s, 2.4 in
the mid-1990s, 2.9 in 2001 and now around 3.5.
This trend starkly contrasts with the early years of Chinese economic
reform. Over 80% of the poverty reduction in China occurred during
Deng Xiaoping's reforms, between 1978 and 1988. Although per-capita
incomes have risen since then, the net incomes of about 400 million
people have declined over the past decade.
India started from a lower economic base but has made greater gains:
Its urban-rural income gap has slowly but steadily declined since the
early 1990s. Over the past decade, economic growth in rural India has
outpaced growth in urban areas by almost 40%. Rural India now accounts
for half of the country's GDP, up from 46% in 1993. Unlike the
Chinese, rural Indians do not have to migrate to already crowded urban
areas to earn a better living.
These trends mirror the path of economic reform in both nations. China
had a huge head start in alleviating poverty. It began free-market
reforms in 1978, while India only started on its current journey away
from socialism toward a market-based system in the early 1990s. Since
the turn of the century, India has been rapidly improving, but China
has been getting worse. And since 2000, poverty and illiteracy in
India have halved, while the same figures doubled in China.
The role of domestic consumption in the economy also demonstrates the
divergent paths of these two developing giants. In China, domestic
consumption as a proportion of GDP has fallen to 35% from around 60%
in the 1980s. The Chinese "economic miracle" depends mostly on exports
and state-led fixed investment. Even Beijing consistently admits this
is an unbalanced, unsustainable strategy. Moreover, depressed
consumption levels and correspondingly high levels of savings by the
citizens of a still-poor country mean growth is uneven and benefits
relatively few. In contrast, domestic consumption composes more than
two-thirds of the Indian economy. India has a lot of catching up to
do, but its poor are rising with the tide, unlike in China.
China's emphasis on state-led fixed-investment growth in urban areas
may have fostered this trend, exacerbating inequality and heavily
favoring a relatively small number of well-placed insiders. After the
1989 Tiananmen Square massacre, Beijing decided the state should
reassert its control of economic growth, which had rested on
private-sector entrepreneurship. Before Tiananmen, private-sector
investment growth in rural China was growing at 20% annually. After
Tiananmen, it dropped to 7%. Hundreds of millions of Chinese have
since missed out on the fruits of the country's spectacular growth.
The Chinese and Indian development models are not actually in
competition, despite what newspaper headlines and books may suggest.
But as magnificent as Shanghai now is, its shiny buildings have been
built on the backs of peasants forced to deposit their savings into
state-owned banks and receiving little in return. In contrast, India
started its reforms 15 years later than China but is quietly and
gradually building its base. Now that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is
starting his second term, he will do well to reject the dangerous
appeal of the Chinese approach.
