I have recently been doing a research with my PG students on trying to find out some characteristics of Innovation as applied to Manufacturing and IT/ITES industries in India.
The results are very promising especially in the Indian context. The work was based on an Innovation paper which appeared in the April / May issue of Sloan MIT review. The 60 respondents with different experiences ranging from 3 years to 20 years, across manufacturing and IT industries were asked to respond to 54 questions related to different aspects of Innovation. A part of the result is being given here.
The most startling revelation was to find that the innovation commitment is less in manufacturing industries than in IT/ITES sector in India. This was because the investment in time, resources needed in Manufacturing is more than in the ITES sector. Hence the pace at which Innovation was happening in manufacturing was slow as compared to ITES sector.
