iGate buys granddad of Indian IT, Patni ..

It is finally out, $300 million iGate will bid for Patni Computer Systems , the grand dad of Indian IT in a $1.2 billion deal. A David hitting Goliath deal.

It is more of a revenge deal as Phaneesh "the other Murthy" iGate CEO, (IITM, IIMA ), is buying the same company where Infy promoters worked as a team before quitting and starting Infosys.

One fact which I cherish and which was one of the top points of CET was the IBM mainframe in the campus when we joined the course ( as per my knowledge only Anna Uty, Kerala Uty and IISc Bangalore had mainframes in the campus then, not even IIT Chennai). PV Ramachandra Menon sir who took computer programming for us made us work on the old type writer data input terminals in the computer centre working in FORTRAN programs on punched cards. I also remember how after giving a set of punched cards we used to go to class or the canteen , coming after an hour or so to get the output.

When we were about to leave the college in March 1986 or so, the first desktop machine came to the computer dept and we were allowed to just have a glimpse of what desktop machines were then !

The experience on mainframes has given so much confidence in IT and related areas for us from CET that we are good as any computer science engineer on IT subjects .. With a little effort, understanding IT topics is smooth sailing for us ..

Flipkart is a recently started online (book) venture by two former amazon.com employees Sachin and Binny Bansal, IITDelhi graduates and operating out of Bangalore.

The site is already the top online booksite in India with almost 2000 books being despatched daily to customers throughout India at huge discounts ranging from 10 to 30 % with free delivery.

I have already placed orders for 4 books and two have been delivered already. The other two will come in two days time. Their service is good, packaging world class, simple uncluttered interface, payment portal very good, search is very convenient and fast processors at the back end enable quick placement of orders. Both debit and credit cards from major banks are being accepted at the site, besides payment on delivery option..

I request all my friends and colleagues to at least visit the site and encourage this entrepreneurial venture from these youngsters and help them succeed and make this world's no 1 online portal. They also deal in games, music and mobiles .. I have not ventured into that domain.

I have earlier done business with rediff, firstandsecond.com, indiatimes,com but this site is different, very simple and elegant. Great benefits too, why should I visit sapna bookstore(the largest in Asia, as it claims), near to where I stay in Koramangala, when I can get the same delivered at Rs 150-200 less, straight to my home !
